Vicarious Trauma

14 Jan 2024

Vicarious traumatization is the process of incurring emotional and psychological distress as a result of indirect exposure to a traumatic event through firsthand account or narrative. As a result of exposure to the traumatic stories and experiences of others, the observer may internalize feelings of bystander guilt, shame and self doubt, sadness or anger about the victimization, become overly sympathetic to the victim and lose focus by disassociation or wandering thoughts when present with the victim or others. What separates vicarious traumatization from secondary trauma, is that the process represents a shift in the attitude and worldview after prolonged exposure.

With todays 24 hour news cycle broadcasting horrors and atrocities taking place both internationally and domestically, viewers are inundated with traumatic material at a near constant rate, causing collective suffering and distress. Consequences of this form of exposure include psychosocial strain, observed by changes in mood and behavior. Increased social tension can arise, through the projection of internalized pain, causing incidents of aggression, tribalism and isolation. As a result, incidents of violence, substance abuse and maladaptive behavior become widespread.

But how do we heal and overcome the symptoms of vicious traumatization? We must first gain environmental awareness and learn to limit exposure to sources of trauma, including media, friends, co workers and associates. Secondly, we must learn to regulate our thoughts and feelings, becoming aware of intrusive thoughts, changes in mood or behavior, and using calming techniques through breath work, art, exercise or meditation and cognitive techniques such as use of affirmations, framing and restructuring. Lastly, we must engage in the process of collective healing. Fostering meaningful connection and intimacy with others, building compassion and understanding while achieving belonging and support.

Spirituality and Mental Health

According to the Pew Research Religious Landscape Study, upwards of 80% of Americans identify with a religious affiliation (70% Christian, 6%-10% Non-Christian Faiths). With a notable rise in representation observed between 2018-2020, it is apparent this recent increase marks an upward shift in belief amongst the population.

Mental Health and Addiction

According to current metrics, around 31.9 million Americans are active drug users, totaling to about 11.7% of the general population. If you include alcohol and tobacco, this number increases sharply to 165 million or 60.2%.
