Caring for Yourself During the Holidays

14 Jan 2024

The holidays are upon us! For many this is a time of rest, connecting, and celebrating. For others it is a time of feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and anxious. Sometimes it’s both.

If this is your first year without a loved one, it may feel uncomfortable or even unbearable. I see you.

If you are struggling with social anxiety and big gatherings seem like an impossible mountain to climb, I see you.

If you are overwhelmed trying to juggle planning a gathering, cooking, and cleaning, I see you.

If this is your first holiday without kids in the home, Isee you.

If this is your first year divorced and you are spending it alone, I see you.

During the holidays, it is important to have the support you need and deserve. Here are some things to consider:

·       Remember that your boundaries matter.

·       Have social support you trust.

·       Increase your coping skills.

·       Check in with your therapist.

·       Consider starting your day with mindfulness.

·       Stretch, walk, move!

·       Identify your support system.

·       Write down your support plan.

·       Our bodies have basic needs, and they matter.

·       If you are uncomfortable, it’s okay to leave.

It is okay to both enjoy the holidays and struggle. Disruption in our daily lives and schedules can be a good thing, and it can also be a hard thing. It may take more energy than usual, and that’s okay. If you find that you need more support, reach out. Short-term counseling is an option. Do what you need to take care of you and make the most of the time you have with those you love.

Spirituality and Mental Health

According to the Pew Research Religious Landscape Study, upwards of 80% of Americans identify with a religious affiliation (70% Christian, 6%-10% Non-Christian Faiths). With a notable rise in representation observed between 2018-2020, it is apparent this recent increase marks an upward shift in belief amongst the population.

Mental Health and Addiction

According to current metrics, around 31.9 million Americans are active drug users, totaling to about 11.7% of the general population. If you include alcohol and tobacco, this number increases sharply to 165 million or 60.2%.
